Vitamin D and Anxiety

Is there any link between the two?

I had bloodwork done, and my vitamin D level came back extremely low. I have also been having more anxiety lately. Just wondering if anyone knows if there is any correlation.

Re: Vitamin D and Anxiety

VERY interesting Laurie! Thank you!

I guess my doctor said the range for vitamin D was between 20 (being very low) and 100 (being average high). She said I should be at about an 80, and I was only at a 21! SHe said having my two kids sucked it all out of me, and that since I am SO low, I should really consider not having any more children.

This would explain soooo much...

Re: Vitamin D and Anxiety

When I was having some anxiety issues in the Spring (which turned out to be hormonal) my doctor checked my vitamin D levels. They were normal, but I take Vitamin D supplements because I don't drink milk. Also, living in Ohio....not a lot of sunshine in the Winter.

Laurie... do you mind sharing your hormonal issues? I ask because I think mine may be related to that as well...

LOL!! I welcome menopause...I've irregular periods since my 20s and I have a small fibroid. It's just getting to menopause that sucks!

I started having problems last Spring and it was around my cycle. I'd been on Ortho Tricyclen and was smart enough to figure out it was hormonal. When I went to the gyno in June, she put me on Lo Estrin, which made a world of difference, but we also discovered my ovaries had shrunk between yearly visits and I figured, it's about time to stop BC pills; I'd been on them 11 years. So, I just quit this month and I'm hoping I feel even better, although not looking forward to the whacked out cycles again.

Who knows....maybe I just had my last period! LOL!!! Hope this helps explain things, Wanting.

I have a Vitamin D deficiency too. I didn't know about the anxiety connection but it does contribute to depression and major body pain.

Re: Vitamin D and Anxiety

What is the recommended amount of Vitamin D??

I'm curious because I have to take the Calcium D Glucarate for hormonal reasons (breast cysts) and think I'm not getting enough D but find it very difficult to find Calcium D Glucarate with an adequate amount of vit D in it. Mine only says Calcium 50 mg and Calcium D Glucarate 250 mg and I take two of these a day.

Re: Vitamin D and Anxiety

These are the RDA guidelines:

Infants, children and adults up to 50 years of age - 5 micrograms of Vitamin D per day (200 IU)
Pregnant and lactating women of all ages, 5 micrograms of Vitamin D per day (200 IU)
Adults 51 to 70 years old, 10 micrograms of Vitamin D per day (400 IU)
Adults above 70 years old, 15 micrograms of Vitamin D per day (600 IU)

Those values are very low and in fact, I take 500 IUs in one vitamin, plus there's D in the yogurt I eat, and I take a supplement during the winter.

Re: Vitamin D and Anxiety

Thanks Laurie. I thought it was higher. The label on this bottle is very confusing. Doesn't measure it in IU or mcg. Just says what I posted above??? Oh actually it's in mg??? Really confusing!

Re: Vitamin D and Anxiety

Thanks Laurie! So I'm guessing a microgram is smaller than a milligram correct? I thought it was measured in milligrams??

A a microgram is smaller than a milligram. It can be measured in either.

I wonder if Vit D defficiancy is caused by SSRI use.

Vitamin D deficiencies are common in women and even more common in older women.

Also, in states like Alaska, Vitamin D is sorely lacking and a good majority of the population suffers from this.

This isn't that uncommon at all and isn't caused by SSRI use. In fact, many people are put on SSRIs, when they simply have a Vitamin D deficiency.

So that's why my bottle of Calcium/Vit D tablets says "for women's health". I always wondered why but never bothered to find out.

Re: Vitamin D and Anxiety

I also take Vit D, in form of Greath Earth chelated Calcium/Magnesium 2:1 600/300mg, max 2 tabs each day (divided in 4 doses), it seems to help my depression and anxiety.

Contents of one tab is 2,5µg which is 50% of RDA. Also because I use Rhinocort 200µg, for controlling my asthma - it can take off calcium in the bones, as also antidepressant can do (increasing risk for osteoporosis) so I find Calcium, Magnesium and Vit D is important for my health.

Living in sweden, and also this season is dark, get too little sunlight.

It has made difference, feels more calmer. Try and find out for yourself!

Re: Vitamin D and Anxiety

I got some Vit D tablets today, I'm not sure if I'm actually deficient but lately with finding it hard to get much done I havent been to see the doctor about it (also I imagine I'd have to give a long explanation to get any tests done) Also I have never been one for getting out in the sun much so I cant imagine I get that much, I also dont drink a lot of milk (just in tea/coffee).

It says it contains 10ug/400 I.U per tablet, I wonder if I should cut them in half since the RDA is 200 I.U per day?

Re: Vitamin D and Anxiety

The RDA is very, very low. Yes, by all means, start out slowly, but don't get hooked on the RDA. I take 2000 IUs/daily and have for years.

Re: Vitamin D and Anxiety

1,000 international units (IU) (or 25 micrograms) for vit D

So really low dose for me for 50 RDA, 2.5µg but it is double compared to 2,5 = 100IU?

I will buy D-vit supplement when I get money soon! I PROMISE YOU LC, LOL!

Re: Vitamin D and Anxiety

I have a question because I think my vit D is too low in the supp I take. Can you overdose or take too much Vitamin D??

I'd like to raise my levels some because I have always had improved mood with sunshine and bad moods without which leads me to think I probably have a deficiency of Vit D.
