Tapering Prednisone

OK, even though the pred. DOES help with my lung issues, I was at a friends house last night and the horror stories of pred. withdrawl freaked me out. Even though I am only on a 5 day regemine, it seems that dropping from 40mg to zero is too much. On Thursday I took 60, Friday 40, Saturday 40. I am supposed to take 40 today, and tomorrow, then done. I am thinking of breaking it down a bit slower. Does anyone have experience or advice??? Thanks always for your help!!!

Re: Tapering Prednisone

Short runs of prednisone aren't a problem. Yes, it can be hard if you're on it for a long time...not the situation here.

Re: Tapering Prednisone

I was on and off Prednisone for my asthma for years. I never had a problem when I stopped taking it.

Good luck

Re: Tapering Prednisone

Ditto to what Scotty and Kitsyl said. Every time I've been on prednisone I've either been on for under a week and have done like you did (60 to around 40 to off) or have been on for about two weeks and have done about 60 to 40 to 20 to off.

Like Scotty said, the problems can come in when the person has been on for a long time (months). You'll be just fine! {{hug}}

And I'm SO glad to hear that your lungs are doing better!

Re: Tapering Prednisone

Doctors tried to push Prednisolone on me for something but I refused after reading up about it. The problem was that I had an infection and something that really worried me was that if I took it it would comprimise my immunity and make it difficult for me to clear the infection. Their answer, take antibiotics too, two of them. Well after I had been on their yucky antibiotics feeling sick to my stomach and the infection came back again I decided to do some research.

I cut stuff out my diet, went herbal and in a few weeks I was cured, they couldn't believe it and kept trying to scare me into taking steroids and antibios. Raw garlic can kill MRSA yet their meds mostly fail to, there's a lot of stuff docs don't know and aren't willing to find out. It worked as a brilliant antibiotic for me without the side effects too (apart from being a bit stinky).

Taken in high doses Pred is not really safe IMHO unless it's an emergency. It doesn't cure anything so you have to keep taking it to it's anti inflammatory effect. Docs flat out lie; I asked one registra if it could supress my immunity he said no. Asked one of my GP's and he was like hell yeah, i wouldn't prescribe it to you in that dose. Nice.

I think the danger is it could cause your adrenals to shut down as you're replacing what they make but you've only been on it for a little while so very hopefully not. Perhaps come off a bit slower if your hesistant. If your adrenals are having a problem adjusting though I think you will know quite quickly.

Here's a good ref: http://www.wddty.com/steroids.html

Hope I haven't scared ya, but it's good to be fully informed aint it? I think so
