How to taper from Trazodone 50mg

Hello all,

I've been on Trazodone 50mg for about 2 months now. I'd like to get off. Any suggestions on the amount by which to taper?

Many thanks!

Re: How to taper from Trazodone 50mg

I would suggest getting a pill cutter and cut the pill into fourths, giving you 12.5mg pieces. Start off taking three for a week or two, then two pieces for a week or two, then one piece for a week or two, and then bam, you're done. Having been on it for only 2 months though, you may be able to cut the pills in half and go from 25mg to 0mg. Trazodone is not as strong of a pill as SSRIs so the withdrawa effects should be minimal, more than likely just some burning/flushness in the head. I take Trazodone also, for a longer period and I experienced no withdrawal going from 50mg to 25mg.
6/10/09 - Started on 100mg Luvox CR.
6/24 - 150mg.
8/16 - Quit Luvox C/T. HORRIBLE withdrawal symptoms.
8/21 - 50mg Fluvoxamine [generic Luvox, non-CR].
8/24 - 100mg Fluvoxamine.
9/4 - Dr. increased to 150mg Luvox CR.
10/30 - Dr. decreased to 100mg Luvox CR.
1/19/10 - Fluvoxamine 100mg.
1/24/10 - 75mg.
2/20/10 - 50mg.
3/14/10 - 25mg.
4/9/10 - 0mg.

Re: How to taper from Trazodone 50mg

FYI, I had no problem whatsoever tapering off of Trazodone. If I'm not mistaken, I was at 50 mg also - cut it in half for a few weeks, then cut THAT half into quarters.

On Prozac/Trazodone since 1991
Weaned myself off Trazodone 2006
Started off at 25 mg of Prozac in 2006
Did my own slow wean of 1 mg every 4-6 weeks
LAST DAY OF PROZAC - August 13, 2009!!!!
Major setback after 5 days on bc pills - Started Citalopram 20 mg 5/10 -Back on Prozac/Trazodone combo by 10/2010

Re: How to taper from Trazodone 50mg

Blue eyes, thanks for sharing. I will need to eventually taper off Trazadone and this is helpful info for me. I will not start the taper until I am done with the Paxil. First things first. I have often worried about the Trazadone taper since sleep is so important in keeping my anxiety in line. Anyone else out there with successful Trazadone tapering success?
8/01/08 20mg (liquid Paxil) started taper at 10% drops
6/10/10 10mg Updosed
7/06/11 9.0mg
7/15/11 9.5mg Trying 5% drops only
04/23/12 4.8mg Had to stop for awhile
01/06/13 4.6mg Resumed taper at .2mg every 21 days
04/20/14 0mg
07/04/14 Trazadone Free (Tapered from 100mg to 0 in two months)
