Seroxat not to be used with Tamoxifen in breast cancer patients

Full shocking story in today's Daily Mail

Women taking a popular anti-depressant at the same time as a drug used to stop breast cancer recurring are more likely to die from the disease, doctors warn.

Researchers have found that the anti-depressant Seroxat can interfere with tamoxifen, which is prescribed to thousands of breast cancer survivors for five years at a time.

The findings have major implications because many of these women also suffer from depression, with up to one in four affected.

This is a 'newer' study. It's all over the media today HERE

I think the older studies have attributed a whole range of SSRi's to breast cancer - this particular study singles out Seroxat/Paxil when used with tamoxifen.

The researchers found that if patients took Seroxat for 25 per cent of the time they were on tamoxifen, they were 24 per cent more likely to die from breast cancer.

When Seroxat was taken for 50 per cent of the time, there was a 54 per cent increase in the chance of death, and when taken for 75 per cent of the treatment patients were 91 per cent more likely to die.

'In conclusion, our findings indicate that the choice of anti-depressant can significantly affect survival in women receiving tamoxifen for breast cancer', their report published in the British Medical Journal said.

Re: Seroxat linked to breast cancer deaths

That's old news, Fiddy. Tamoxifen and ADs have never mixed and in fact, Tamoxifen shouldn't be used with many drugs.

The title of your thread is being changed, as Paxil is NOT linked to breast cancer deaths. This is totally misleading and sounds as though Paxil alone, causes breast cancer deaths.

There is a warning with ALL SSRIs and Tamoxifen in women who have been, or are being treated for breast cancer.

Re: Seroxat not to be used with Tamoxifen in breast cancer patients

Hi Laurie,

The 'Headline' - 'Anti-depressant linked to breast cancer deaths' appears in today's Daily Mail. The article names the antidepressant as Seroxat.

As for it being old news, Reuters ran with it today as did the Press Association.

It's old news that Paxil and other antidepressants should not be used with tamoxifen, however, this particular study singles out Seroxat/Paxil - hence the original title of this thread.

No intention to mislead, that's why I threw up the link to the Daily Mail article in my original post.

Hi Laurie,

The 'new' study was carried out on 2,430 women, the link from Bloomberg shows that study included 945 women on tamoxifen, and an additional 353 also using an antidepressant.

This from The Guardian [today]

It explains it better than I can Laurie.

Ah. That's the trouble with the written word, it's sometimes confuzzling to the reader yet perfectly clear to the writer :-)

My back and shoulder are killing me tonight. Physio soon, hopefully he/she will sort me out.
