Weight Control NOT Fun

I went to my yearly physical appointment, yesterday, and came away feeling more than a little angered at the scale. First of all, I eat the most fabulously healthy diet than I have ever eaten in my life, and I've kept refining it and tuning it up over the past 4 years. No white sugar, no white flour, low carbohydrates (whole grains, if I eat them), and the list goes on. I turn away all sinful looking things with the greatest of willpower.

Even so, I have gained weight in eating well, I have lost weight at times, and in those times when I've really stepped up my physical activity, I am always pleasantly surprised.

Unfortunately, after an entire summer of doing the very best job that I've ever done in my eating, as well as in my working out almost daily, I HAVE GAINED FOUR POUNDS FROM WHERE I WAS A YEAR AGO!!!

It is as though I will start to feel like I'm slimming a bit more, and then I rebound upward. It's the darnedest thing.

So, at this moment, I am at the 5.3 ml mark in my Lexapro taper. I am 50 years old. My BMI is in the average zone, but I am so not where I want to be.

My doctor feels my pain, and just to humor me, I think, he ordered my thyroid to be tested. I'm pretty sure that it will be normal. But I appreciate his caring measure.

So next on my list, and I've already started today, is portion control. Healthy food is healthy, but perhaps I'm not monitoring the amount that I'm taking in.

I just seriously hope that once that I'm through with my taper, I will see the tides turn. At the age of 50, I have to wonder, though. Am I simply destined for middle age spread, no matter what I do?

Misery loves company....anyone care to join?

Re: Weight Control NOT Fun

The fact is that ssri's(yes, all of them) cause weight gain, regardless of what you do. The GOOD news is that once you are completely off Lexapro, the weight will come off too.

Yup, it's harder after 50, but very doable once you remove the drug influence. I've been doing weight watchers online for 10 weeks and have lost 17 pounds...I'm 54, so age doesn't mean that it's impossible.

Re: Weight Control NOT Fun

I heard that it takes at least 7 months to a year for the weight to come off after you stop antidepressants. Also, sometimes a doctor thinks your thyroid is ok/normal just cause it's in range..but some people need their levels higher or lower then they have on the test.

Re: Weight Control NOT Fun

i have been overweight for most most twenties - i think that this is due to paxil.

i have been doing weight watchers for 2 months and have lost 14lbs. i find it a great lifetsyle choice and i am not hungry doing this diet.

i wish that i would have done it years ago.
