Will my SEX DRIVE come back? (Weaned off paxil)

Hello forum,

I am new to this website and I do not consider myself the type to go on forums and look for answers but life had dealt me a bad deck of cards for the past 8 and a half years. My story goes something like this: I got on paxil at the age of 20 and finally got off it at the age of 28. It took me about 7 months to wean off paxil but i did it and it was not extremely terrible but after each reduction in dosage, you sure felt it for a few days. Anyway, I weaned myself off from 30 mgs to nothing and my last dosage was 1.25 for 4 weeks and I was officially done. It has now been 2 months now and I am completely off paxil but I am wondering if my sex drive will return to normal? I can have an erection a lil and can also have sex but I can't get that same thrill and last longing intense drive like i used to have. I would have to say that my sex drive now is no where near half of where it used to be and I honestly do not feel like a man. Before paxil, if i just thought of sex or the idea of it, i would immediately get an erection and it would be hard for me to convince myself to relax down there but now it is the complete opposite. I can only get an erection if i massage myself down there or have foreplay with my partner. My question to this forum is simple: IS IT POSSIBLE FOR YOU TO RECOVER YOUR SEX DRIVE COMPLETELY, (100%) AFTER BEING OFF PAXIL FOR OVER 8 YEARS? HAS ANYONE EVER COMPLETELY GOTTEN THEIR FULL SEX DRIVE BACK? HELP ME FORUM PLEASE. THANK YOU AND GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE SUFFERING IN THIS CONDITION.

Re: Will my SEX DRIVE come back? (Weaned off paxil)

My opinion is to give yourself some more healing time - and your sex drive will come back - I know that is easy for me to say. I think that it is encouraging that it has started to come back after just 2 months.

I look at it this way - I am a 50 something woman - paxil pooped out on me over the past year - have gone thru hell as it stopped working for me. I have been on it 10 years - no sex drive, inability to have orgasms..

and since it has pooped.. my ability has come back so I have to think a young person's ability will return also with dis-continuing the drug.

Re: Will my SEX DRIVE come back? (Weaned off paxil)

Might want get your hormone levels checked, I'm 36 and last physical my test and free test where way below normal...on the scale for below normal for a 75 year old. I'm pretty sure 8 years ago when started paxil they where normal.
Not saying it's the paxils fault, but I will be checking them quite few times after I get past the 0mg mark.
Insurance will normally cover blood work once or twice a year, and mines never questioned the extra stuff I have the dr check.
If your in the USA, private md labs online is pretty cheap for testing the basic testosterone stuff. They send me to the same local lab my dr uses.

Re: Will my SEX DRIVE come back? (Weaned off paxil)

Hey Forum,

Thank you all for the encouragement and advice. But the truth is that I was always able to have sex even during my time on paxil but no where near the same before i became a paxil user. I just hope I do not have permanent sexual side effects- i read some posts on here and some actually have that. Truth is I can probably live with a low sex drive but I sure dont want to. The sex drive i used to have made me want to work out and be active and still have the energy to have sex afterwards. I am going to get my testosterone checked out soon and see what I can do to get myself back to normal again. Have any of you guys ever knew anyone that got their sex drive back after discontinuing their usage of paxil? I mean anyone? Has anyone honestly ever read a post on here or met anyone that fully recovered their sex drive and energy after quitting paxil? Let me know forum, thanks and I wish the best for all of you guys. Peace

Yes, it will come back. This isn't about hormones, this is about brain chemistry(dopamine) that has been altered and needs time to return to normal. Do not start playing the hormone game. Let your brain recover.

Many here have been where you are and completely recovered.

2 months off is way to soon to expect your brain to be "normal" again. Everyone is different, but I can tell that few see anything positive in this area at 2 months. Yes, it will come back, and you're going to have to find the patience to just allow it to happen. Stressing over it just delays the recovery, since the sex act is in large part an emotional thing.

In response to your question of weather full restoration of libido is possible after SSRI's, well, the brain has been permanently altered by these disgusting mind numbing, soul robbing, dehumanizing, experimental candies dispensed by greedy drug companies who use psychiatrists as pawns in a game of hit and miss. If u dont believe me well then ask your doc who prescribed these meds the same question ur asking on this forum and he will probably tell you that your depression symptoms have returned and thats why your libido is out of whack and therefore need to be reinstated on drugs. I work in a psych hospital and deal directly with patients, guys are twenty effing years old wetting their beds. Guys are trying to cut off their genitals because the drugs have completely caastrated any sense of dignity or feeling that may have existed. If you want to try something to restore libido through Dopamine pathways, the prescription drug bromocriptine and buproprion seem to help. The outcome you are looking for has completely evaporated in the ether of time and space however...we will never be normal again thanks to big pharma who have left their permanent stamp in our cells. L. Ron Hubbard was not such a quack after all!

Wrong. That is just not true for everyone. I am about 40% recovered after total dysfunction!

Can we we delete frankdee's comment?

That would be so crushing to someone early on. I might have killed myself if I had read that in January. Ugh...

Re: Will my SEX DRIVE come back? (Weaned off paxil)

just read the very negative post...wow..

I guess - I just feel very differently - I know I am a woman - but my sex drive and ability to have orgasms has returned - as I wean - the more "normal" - I become.. and yes.. 50 something women do have a sex drive and enjoy sex - it isn't just for the young - shocking though that may be for the young folk to imagine - I know.

I do think it takes some time to heal and possibly to relax about the whole thing - the more you worry - it doesn't help..

Re: Will my SEX DRIVE come back? (Weaned off paxil)

is this guy frankdee seriously? its no wonder he was on drugs in the first place. This guy was on meds and he works in a psychiatric place? go figure? I am two months off and I can have sex but it is not as enjoyable and im not as quick to rush into sex like i used to before the meds. All i know is that tapering off paxil seems to ruin many peoples' sex drive as opposed to coming off it cold turkey or coming off it really fast through a 2 week taper or something. anyone noticed this? and is this frankdee guy seriously? its one thing for him to give out all this negative info but it is another for him to be right? is this guy right in anyway? i hope not .. I get the impression that this guy is always full of negativity.

Re: Will my SEX DRIVE come back? (Weaned off paxil)

I just want to know one thing. This question is for people who have been on paxil for a number of years, atleast 5 ok? I been on it for 8 years and tapered off it very slowly- went from 30 mg to 1.5 to quit- and it has taken me 10 months to quit paxil off tapering, that is what i call a very very slow tapering. every month i would decrease its intake until i was down to 1.5mg. Now my question is this... has anyone in here noticed that tapering off paxil, in the manner many have done to successfully get off this drug, destroys a persons sex drive permanently? I mean seriously, has anyone and i mean anyone in the history of all paxil users in this forum or any other forum ever recovered their sex drive completely after weaning off this medicine in the same manner that I did? anyone ? This seems unbearable honestly because it seems like i will forever be stuck with a low sex drive and it takes a lot of stimulation for me to actually have sex now. Let me know forum. I am assuming people who have been on here for years and read many posts would know how to answer this question. when i first tried to quit paxil after 4 years being on it, i quit in a 2 week taper and it was too soon and my sex drive came back like fire, as if i was on 2 pills of viagra.. and i got scared because my anxiety was off the roof so i went back on it, but now that i have finally gotten off the drug after being on it for 8 years and tapered extremely slowly (almost a year of tapering) i have an incredibly low sex drive in comparison to what i used to have and it seems like I will never get it back to the way it used to be before taking this fkin drug. Now I can still have sex and orgasm but it is not fulfilling and i have a low desire for it now. again, is there anyone in the history of this forum who has been in my shoes, tapered extremely slowly and was on the meds for a number of years to recover their sex drive back to normal? let me know ... it is has become apparent to me that tapering off this medicine slowly destroys your sex drive.

Everyone is different. Some people have had 1 or 2 pills of an SSRI and had total dysfunction, for 8-9 years (permanent). Others like me, were on for 4 years (on and off during childhood, so much longer really) and did a 2 week taper (Cold turkey), got zapped and now have things slowly coming back!

Everyone's body is different so you really can't compare your stories with anyone. With your case I can almost guarantee that with time (months maybe years man...) it will come back much much stronger.

But ask yourself this... If it didnt come back 100% wouldn't you still be able to find joy in life? My sexual dysfunction was total at one point. No erections, ZERO libido, total absence of feeling genitals.... You wouldn't like that would you? Now think of what you are still capable of. I went from THAT to having sex now and beginning to have higher libido. Take stock of what you have, realize I made it from 0% to 100% and realize you will probably make the same leaps!

You have to be patient. Its day by day mate.

Brunyan, you are a good dude. thanks I appreciate the advice. I am still able to get an erection if i stimulate myself through movies or with my girlfriend but man it takes a lot for me to actually have a full size erection and look forward to sex. It is like my desire has incredibly decreased, only when i am actually with my girl and we are doing stuff does it semi come up. You have been one of the most helpful people on here, thanks. I am sure it will come back one day, hopefully you are right and it will be only a few months.

Maybe you are worried because you are associating your returning sex drive with high anxiety~ if my sex drive comes back so will the anxiety. I have been on paxil for a long time and now my sex drive is returning...but so is some anxiety. Don't assume that it won't get better. When your body is ready, you will know!

Re: Will my SEX DRIVE come back? (Weaned off paxil)

Thank you for the encouragement. I don't know if i associate sex drive with anxiety- I mean i had a healthy sex drive in high school and took no pills at all. I started taking paxil in college. I think the problem with my first attempt to quit paxil was that i came off it way too quickly and my doctor does not even know what he was prescribing. I mean how in the hell is he going to tell me to come off this drug in 2 or 3 weeks. The vast majority of people who came off this medicine never came off it in a few weeks but took months atleast, and for many like myself it took almost 1 year. These doctors do not know what they are prescribing. Truth is I have always been a nervous guy, ever since I can remember- even as a kid. Maybe something happened to me when I was real young that made me a nervous person. Or maybe it is chemical ? I do not know but I sure will explore it during the time I have on this earth. My opinion so far is that it is slightly chemical and psychological. Maybe I am vitamin deficient in some areas along having some bad trauma situations when i was young. It is funny sometimes when i think about it because I am not a person who gets nervous on a daily basis. But I do panic and feel like running away when I have a big challenge a head of me that I doubt I can perform. I am only 28 years old but I have done some pretty brave things in my life regardless of this condition. I remember several years ago i had to speak in front of hundreds of people (approximately 300) and I did it with relative ease. I was a little nervous at first but I did it quite smoothly. However, with some other things I crumble - it is weird. But I remember when I graduated college and landed my first job I quit my job during training because I had a hard time understanding the material I was learning and the instructor for the company was going quite fast. Now i was very nervous during that period because the pressure to to pass was overwhelming for me because half of the stuff I did not understand and many did not either but they continued to stay till the end of the 6 week training session, for me I quit when I had a near anxiety attack at 3 weeks in because i was struggling during this exam. Now others stayed in while they were failing and I don't think they stressed it like I did- but with me, the minute i realized I am not good enough for something or doubt that I will be able to live up to the standard or do not understand something that is vital in my life to do well, i sort of lose confidence and crumble inside and that manifests into an anxiety attack when others around me are counting on me to do well. It has been years since I had an anxiety attack but I get angry at myself for not living up to a standard or performance, especially if i know i want it real bad. I do not consider myself a coward- I'll actually physically fight someone if I have no choice and they won't leave alone, but I guess I feel anxiety and depressed when crunch time is on and I can't do well when others are expecting me too. I know one thing at least, one day,God Willing I will become smart enough to understand what I went through and fix this problem for myself and others who are afflicted with this condition. Peace be upon all people who struggle with anxiety and depression.
