19 mnths post c/t prozac - confirmed hearing loss/sensory hearing loss
Have only last week had a full explanation from an audiologist regarding my hearing test results. Just to explain that the problems with my ears began as soon as I put that first pill in my mouth, voiced my concerns with the doctor but I was told that there were no side effects with the medication to that effect! Anyway, for months I have suffered with an immense pressure feeling in my ears, which has gradually been improving to presently being tolerable. I also felt that although my hearing had been dulled, that I could hear okay. But I knew that no sounds whatsoever were stimulating any kind of emotional response. So, ultimately, I have permanent hearing loss and sensory hearing loss. It is unusual in my case as I have not had a stroke or trauma to the ears or a bad virus. Have to attend another hearing test in six months. I am just wondering if the pressure feeling in my ears is improving then maybe my next hearing test might prove different?

Chrissy, let us know how your next hearing test goes.
I've been having constant ear pressure since getting down to about 7 mg, also the sound of my pulse hishing in there most of the time. It doesn't bother me as much as the "crickets" and "Cicada" type noise I had in the beginning. That seems to have eased off, thankfully. Every so ofter though I go deaf for a fraction of a second. it's like someone switches all sound of and one very fast. Wonder if you have had that. Hearing problems are a common complaint. I've stopped mentioning side effects to the doctor. it's just a waste of breath. Paxil has no side effects as far as they're concerned. I think they've been paid off.

Re: 19 mnths post c/t prozac - confirmed hearing loss/sensory hearing loss
Hi Chrissy,
I'm not an audiologist, but I'm a speech/language pathologist who studied the required amount of audiology for me to obtain my degree, back in the day. That said, things of the audiological nature interest me. Also, a couple of years ago, I exhibited a slight hearing loss in my right ear...the ear that I have some E. tube dysfunction, from time to time. Your question interests me, especially where I'm at with my taper. Sometimes I feel like my hearing has improved, as I'm not as "full" in the sinuses and ears, especially very recently. My theory....don't be surprised if you DO regain some hearing. Unless there has been physical damage inside, I'd hold out for hope! Know, though, that I really have absolutely no idea. I just have some hunches. Keep us posted!

In other words....decreased inflammation can only be a good thing for the hearing mechanism, right?

It will be a lot better next time I believe, my hearing was effected by WD and is still.. sometimes I turn on the volume to the max in my car and the song sounds quiet. and sometimes, half of that full volume is very noisy.

Re: 19 mnths post c/t prozac - confirmed hearing loss/sensory hearing loss
Thanks for the replies. I will definitely post in six months time with any news. Never had any deafness pkj, and noises aren't something i've suffered from either. My problem has been severe pressure since going cold turkey and a blocked feeling. Could be inflammation like Gracings mentioned, as it has gotten better to bearable over the last few months.
It's the sensory part that I want to improve the most, someone could set off a firework next to me without me knowing and I wouldn't react, no sound offers a reaction, from day to day noises to music etc. Fingers crossed anyway that things improve and thank you all for your input. ![]() |
