20mg to 15mg drop - depressed

I dropped from 20 to 15mg a week ago, after being on 20mg for 2 weeks. I don't feel as anxious on this dose but have begun experiencing depression. The problem im having on this dose is that I don't feel like doing anything and getting out of bed is such a chore. I just want to sit or lie down all day. The reduction was recommended by my psychiatrist. I feel this drug is doing more harm than good at this point. I will remain on this dose until I stabilize and see if the depression lifts. I initially started taking paxil for panic attacks and anxiety.

Re: 20mg to 15mg drop - depressed

that too big a drop. i did this in 2007 and after 3 weeks the bad thoughts and head zaps were too much so i went back up to 20mg.

the only way is 10% drops every 3-6 weeks.

so from 20mg - it is 18mg.

what are you on now, paxil?

Re: 20mg to 15mg drop - depressed

The issue with updosing is I feel like I stabilize for a week or so and then the anxiety returns. I don't know whether this is a side effect of the drug or a sign of poop out. I would hate to keep updosing only to find out the drug isnt working and then have to wean slowly. Also, the derealization and dizziness when turning my head is hard enough to deal with, along with the new depression symptom.

Re: 20mg to 15mg drop - depressed

You need to stop going up and down. Either you taper off for good or leave it alone. But all of this is causing chaos in your brain.

Try to stabilize for a few weeks. The decide if you want to go off and do a proper taper.

If you have not been on a particular dosage for more than a few weeks, then you can try 2.5mg and see how it works. 5mg is rather large drop.

I tapered from 20mg to 10mg in 2.5 mg increments and had very minor issues.

Re: 20mg to 15mg drop - depressed

I'll remain on this dose and stabilize. The anxiety was bad enough, but with every paxil increase I feel less and less human. I feel like a zombie at times.
On a positive note, I was able to fall asleep without the help of a melatonin supplement last night.

Re: 20mg to 15mg drop - depressed

I spoke to my doctor a few minutes ago. She suggested alternating between 15 and 20mg. Maybe I should start looking for a new doctor.

Re: 20mg to 15mg drop - depressed

that is waaaaaaaaaay to fast..and the alternating thing does not work..you need to taper at the 10% dose downs..every 3-6 weeks..trust me i have been through it 2 times..before doing it really slow this time..and i have been tapering from 20mgs for almost 2 years

Re: 20mg to 15mg drop - depressed

Hi greekcs,

I see you have been around a while. Like me I went from 20 t0 30 for several months and felt terrible. I learned that not only is it important to dose down at 10% but also take the medicine at the same time each day. And take your meds each day.

At the beginning of my taper I thought the time line was something I could not do. As I kept reading online others were going down in there dose and I was standing still. Soon I decided that they were progressing along on their taper and I was sill in my state of nothing.

You will feel better after you stableize at what ever works for you if 20 is not working go to 25 or what ever whatever works for you, then begin to drop at 10% you will be surprised with the result. It may take several weeks to stablize you may see a pattern after a while. In the begining I had to wait 6 to 8 weeks to stablize because my system needed that much time. Listen to your body it is your best (doctor) helper.

Keep posting and let us know how you are doing.
Wishing you the best with your taper.

My doctor gave me the same advice. I don't think you will easily find another doctor who will give you different advice. The standard procedure for weaning off of an SSRI is to alternate days and drop in large steps. Usually, they'll have you at 0mg/day within a month or two. Most doctors consider the information they get from their patients as anecdotal, and the information they get from the drug manufacturers as scientific. So, they continue to dole out the same information and ignore the effect it has on their patients.

I initially followed my doctor's advice, albeit at a much slower rate and with no day skipping, but it was still too fast.

Sounds like poop out to me - exactly what happened to me with the last couple of increases (except for me it was depression, not anxiety) until I was on a whopping 80mgs and suffering more than ever before.
Glad you're thinking about a taper, best thing I ever did. But as everyone else is saying... stabilise as much as you can first, don't alternate, and go SLOWLY.

Re: 20mg to 15mg drop - depressed

Thanks for all the advice. I was doing so well on just 5mg for over a year and then health anxiety put me over the edge. Now I feel like the drug stopped working, but I was taking such a small dose. I know I need to stabalize but im running out of patience with this poison. I don't feel like doing anything most of the day. I do get spurts of positive energy throughout the day that last a few minutes.
