How to wean off Paxil from just 5 mg?

Found out I'd stopped paxil too quickly....so I started back up on just 5 mg. How do I gradually taper off of that? Take every other day for awhile....then every 2 days.....?

It depends. How long were you initially on Paxil, or any other SSRI (if you have taken any)?

I would recommend possibly reinstating at a higher dose and then tapering by 10% every 4-6 weeks.

Hi Kathy--first things first, you need to wait a while to get stable on the 5mg, then you can start with a 10% every 4-6 week taper. Don't start skipping doses, it will really cause problems.

Hello, Kathy
Listen to Brassmonkey (#5 above)
You can probably get LIQUID PAXIL - makes weaning A LOT EASIER.
If the "powers that be" kick up a fuss and say you nay, make a fuss yourself until you get what you want.
And keep in touch with us at PP.
You'll be fine.

Re: How to wean off Paxil from just 5 mg?

kathy you dont need to go higher if you were stable at at 5mgs for 3 months as you said in your last thread. Stick with 5 till your symptoms calm down again. Then go down 10% every 3-6 weeks as BM says . Its a case of stablising in between dose drops.... your body will tell you when youre safe to drop again
You need to get some tools in place to deal with your original problem though as the paxil just masked the problem it didnt cure it. xxx

Getting some empty gelcaps also helps, 'cause then you can use the little bits and powder so you don't waste anythng.

Re: How to wean off Paxil from just 5 mg?

As others mentioned, if you can go the liquid stepped dose, that's the way to go.

I was on the same dosages as you for about the same amount of time. I'd tried going cold turkey off of 20mg years ago and it was extremely unpleasant. I went from 20mg to 10mg and was on 10mg for years. Then I went to 5mg (I was splitting a 20mg pill into quarters) for several months and then stopped altogether. That was last August.

It went okay but within a few days I was having some weird bouts of extreme self-consciousness. I guess it was generalized anxiety. I was nervous about how I'd react to going off the meds after being on them for about 13 years which I think only made things a little worse.

What helped me the most was taking magnesium malate and fish oil capsules. That made a huge difference for me. I'd already been taking fish oil capsules but I started the magnesium malate about a week after I stopped taking Paxil. The self-consciousness and twitchiness lessened greatly within a day or two and then went away altogether. I'm doing fine now, almost a year later.

I'm going to ask my doctor for the liquid paxil and I'm also going to try the magnesium malate and fish oil capsules to help with withdrawal...(thank you Zawinul!).

Re: How to wean off Paxil from just 5 mg?

You're welcome and good luck, Kathy. The first day of no Paxil last August, I felt like I was going over Niagra Falls in a barrel - "Aghhhhhhhhh!" I remembered going cold turkey years before and it was a miserable and scary experience. I thought I'd have to take that miserable med for the rest of my life. After nearly a year off of it, I feel far better than I did when I was taking that poison. I wish I'd been able to kick it earlier.

I don't remember where I first heard about magnesium as an aid but I'm pretty sure it was this site. There's a sticky post called "The Miracle of Magnesium" under the "Methods of Wellbeing" portion of the forum. It's worth a read.

There are different kinds of magnesium supplements available. Magnesium citrate is used for relieving constipation so I'd stay away from that one. Magnesium malate can give a very slight energy boost (it does so in a good way, it's not like speed or something) so I usually take one in the morning and one at midafternoon. The particular brand I take is 200mg of magnesium and 960mg of malate per pill.

Another supplement I'd recommend is a B vitamin complex. Paxil or no Paxil I've noticed it helps my overall mental alertness and some research shows that it helps with mood. Vitamin D helps with mood also, although, you might want to get your Vitamin D levels tested to get an idea of how much you should take.

Of all of the various supplements I've tried, magnesium has made the most difference for me.

One of the more interesting things to me about this overall experience is realizing just how much we humans are a bag of chemicals. Of course, we are much more than that but it's amazing how much our lives can be altered for better or worse by small alterations of our body chemistry.
