recommended reading

With the glut of self-help books on the market, I was wondering if some of you could help seperatee the wheat from the chafe by recommending a few good ones. Not neccesarily books that deal specifically with anxiety/depression (although those might be beneficial as well) but rather books about cultivating joy, apppreciation, life skills and happiness.

Best to all,
Jeff

anna quinlen's book " a short guide to a happy life" is great.

here is a synopsis from amazon.com:

"Life is made of moments, small pieces of silver amidst long stretches of tedium. It would be wonderful if they came to us unsummoned, but particularly in lives as busy as the ones most of us lead now, that won't happen. We have to teach ourselves now to live, really live...to love the journey, not the destination."

In this treasure of a book, Anna Quindlen, the bestselling novelist and columnist, reflects on what it takes to "get a life"--to live deeply every day and from your own unique self, rather than merely to exist through your days. "Knowledge of our own mortality is the greatest gift God ever gives us," Quindlen writes, "because unless you know the clock is ticking, it is so easy to waste our days, our lives." Her mother died when Quindlen was nineteen: "It was the dividing line between seeing the world in black and white, and in Technicolor. The lights came on for the darkest possible reason....I learned something enduring, in a very short period of time, about life. And that was that it was glorious, and that you had no business taking it for granted." But how to live from that perspective, to fully engage in our days? In A Short Guide to a Happy Life, Quindlen guides us with an understanding that comes from knowing how to see the view, the richness in living

Tom,

Thank you for the recommendation. However, I should let you know that I'm not Christian nor religous. Spiritual yes, religous no. Still, I respect your beliefs and am happy that you have found some comfort in the Bible.

Bev, Mr. X and Darren, I will check out those books. Thank you.

Any other ones worked for anybody?

p.s. You don't have to be a Christian to read the Bible. Satan knows the Bible better than anyone.

One of my most FAVORITE BOOKS OF ALL TIME!!!!!

Endurance by Alfred Lansing.
its about Sir Ernest Shakelton and his voyage to the antarctic in 1914.
the plan was to cross the continent by ski and sledge. hook up with the other boat on the opposite side of the continent and go home.
it didnt work out that way.

but they all live.

the tale is in their endurance and their survival. totally exciting non-fiction story that is inspiring and thrilling! its a "quit-yer-*****in" and get on with life kind of book! absolutely one of the most exciting things i have ever read!!

Tom,

When I look at religion I see many roads all leading towards the same path. As human beings, we were never content to live as one single species all sharing the same planet and united towards a common goal (ie. the greater good for the greater number.) So we began to devise ways to divide and seperate ourselves. We created countries and borders, we took notice of skin colour and gender. We began to look beyond ourselves and craved a higher power to give our short and often chaotic lives on this planet some semblance of meaning. Unfortunately, once again we were not content with unity. Too many wars have been fought, too many lives lost, too much hatred and discord all in the name of religion.

I am a Jew (cultural, non-practicing), you are a Christian, someone else is Catholic, another is Muslim, yet another might be an atheist. What does it really matter? We all want the same things out of life; ie. health, peace, security, love etc. Religion is not substantive. We have no empirical evidence dictating who or what is the "one true" god(s). What we do no as incontravertable fact is that we are all human, we were all born and one day we will all die. What lies beyond that is not known. As one who is spiritual but not religious, I would like to believe that there is a higher power and some divine force at work. I want to believe there is order to this chaotic mass of energy called Earth. I want to believe there is more to life than the finite number of years we are given above ground. I want to believe there is more out there than what we can merely see, feel, hear, smell and taste. I would just rather not put a name and a face on what I believe, nor would I want to shun anyone from believing what they do because they choose to put that name and face on what they believe.

Tom, you are my brother and I respect your sincerity, passion and commitment to what you believe in. I choose not to read the Bible but I will never shun you for choosing to do so. Hopefully you will respect my choice as I do yours.

All the best,
Jeff

Jeff you wrote.. one day we will all die. What lies beyond that is not known.

Gods word tells us whats after death the bible says..

Heb*9:27
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

The reason everthing is the way it is is because of sin and one day man has to account (pay)for that sin .But God loves us so much that by he's Grace is sent is Son to take our place so we do not have to pay for our sin.The bible is a manual of life to us and in it Gods show us how to live it and how we can know him.

Joh*3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Jeff please don't take this the wrong way about 24years ago I found this truth God showed me his mercy ,love to me and I just want to share it with you

God Bless You

Kids.....its a thread about GOOD BOOKS!
can we leave it as ....Tom thinks the Bible is a GOOD BOOK to read.

going any further starts to be preachin' and proselytizing.

Im tellin' ya.....read ENDURANCE

Also....many books by Thich Nhat Hahn. He is a buddhist monk with wonderful pearls of wisdom to how to lead a productive and happy and peaceful life. he even has a book called Living Christ, Living Buddha.
its pretty across the board and non-denominational.

peace

Thank you Beverly,

Thanks for the recommendations. I will seek out those books. That's what I was looking for when I started this thread. I did not want this to turn into a debate about religion. It's just too touchy a subject.

I'm still interested in some other books that have helped, but please let's keep religion out of it from here on in.

Jeff

Hello Beverly,

It's a spiritual book and it's quite "deep" (is this the right term for "profond" ?). I read it twice now and feel I should read it again. Sometimes I need a few reading to better and better understand.

p.s. Had to do the same thing with "The road less traveled" by Scott Peck that I read many years ago. I think I read that book 4 times
