Polypharmacy: SSRI's and Antipsychotics

I am curious to know who many people here have had
SSRI's combined with Antipsychotics? and if so why were
both prescribed and what were your experiences?
which withdrawal was worse ? SSRI or AP's

Re: Polypharmacy: SSRI's and Antipsychotics

Hi,

I was prescribed 12.5 mg of Seroquel to help with anxiety. I took it for 5 days, my blood pressure dropped, I passed out on the Kitchen floor and never took it again.

It seems to be very common now for atypicals to be used as augmentors to AD's for depression as well as anxiety.

May I ask - how did a panic attack land you on so many medications and in a psychiatric facility? Surely ER doctors recognize panic attacks - and usually throw a valium at you and send you home?

Re: Polypharmacy: SSRI's and Antipsychotics

Thanks for the reply

The prozac withdrawal made me anxious beyond words/insane
and I though I was having a heart attack and was almost
hysterical and thus I called 911 - and the ambulance crew took me to
the ER because they thought I needed evaluation.

At the ER they decided to blue sheet me because I had called 911 and was still extremely anxious and terrified that I might be dying.
So I was kept in the hospital and given Zoloft, Zyprexa (at 30 mg) and Risperdal (at 2 mg) and it all went downhill frm there. I got worse and was just kept longer and longer.

From what I have read Prozac withdrawal can cause the symptoms I had. The doctors should have recognized this.

Re: Polypharmacy: SSRI's and Antipsychotics

I'm trying to find help regarding this issue.
Are there other posts with more info than this one?
I visited in 2010 but have difficulty managing the site.
I have many issues lingering after being med free for over two years.
Zyprexa and Celexa.
Any suggestions for connecting here?

Thank you Jon.
What does TD and anhedonial mean?
I have so many but primarily Central Nervous System symptoms.
I hate to "list" them all!!
Until I feel a bit more comfortable.
I see you are new also. We will have to find posts regarding ongoing issues even after prolonged med free time!

Re: Polypharmacy: SSRI's and Antipsychotics

Hi Lynne,
welcome to the group here and thank you for the post.

I meant anhedonia - feeling flat emotionally, joyless
I am just curious to find out if anyone has recovered?

I am esp bothered by the TD and my flat 'zombie' gaze-
friends say I look scary
and I used to have a 'radiant' smile

Jon
ps = I sort of wish the psychiatrist would be sent to hell and forced to take these drugs

Re: Polypharmacy: SSRI's and Antipsychotics

Six months after I quit zoloft way too fast in 2004 I landed in the hospital due to the extreme thoughts and feelings and impules associated with withdrawal, that I didn't know was wd at the time. Due to my severe wd induced obsessive thoughts, dispair and anxiety the docs put me on 200 mg of zoloft, lithium (can't remember dose) and risperdol(can't remember dose). Needless to say in about 1 month I was a zombie. I cold turkeyed the lithium and risperdal right away with no problems. Still felt zombie-like.

I know now that I was "polypharmacied" due to the symptoms of withdrawal-wish I had known then what I know now, as I'm sure we all do.

Best to you!

Re: Polypharmacy: SSRI's and Antipsychotics

Thanks Jon and Scotty for the info.

I did have severe bruxism and at one time thought it might be TD but I was spared that symptom. I'm so sorry. I hope it resolves itself Jon.
Many symptoms did resolve. Severe Tremors, chronic sweating and the bruxism, thank goodness.

Jon, I hear you when you express your anger at the psychiatrist. I had to resolve that also. I know my doc was doing what he thought best. It's the pharmaceutical companies and the FDA that really should be held accountable.
Eli Lilly pays out billions each year for Zyprexa settlements but they make so many more billions it's like a drop in the bucket to them.

I personally am a woman of faith and believe that one day all wrongs will be righted. It gives me a measure of peace.
I hope you are in some kind of community (physical) where you find support and love.
You deserve a rich and satisfying life despite the literal hell on earth we have been through.
