Can't agree that SSRI's all cause numbness

I have to just put this out here...I see people stating that SSRI's "numb" you and that is how they work. Or that they all make you a zombie so you don't feel, which is the way they mask depression/anxiety. I have to say after years on Effexor, numbness/anhedonia, cognitive slowness and brain fog were never an issue. Never. Not even in withdrawal, and not while on Celexa or Cipralex even though they were short term. I DO have all of these issues with Paxil, absolutely. But not with the others. I have been told, for what it's worth, by a Dr and also a psychiatrist that these symptoms are undesirable possible side effects...but not the mechanism by which they work. I realize the way they work is a mystery etc etc....I'm just saying what I have experienced and what I have been told.

2005-2010 Effexor XR 112.5mg-262.5mg for PPD
June-Dec 2010 Poop-out (crash)
3 month cross taper off Effexor onto 40mg Cipralex, switched to 20mg Celexa, switched to 20mg Paxil
Nothing helped except waiting 7 months to stabilize on Paxil then starting to taper:
Oct'11 to Nov '12 20mg-10mg
March'13 to Feb'14 9mg -4mg
Feb 7/14-4.0mg
April 1/14-3.6mg

well i've only ever tried effexor & paxil...but i have to say that i'm finding the side effects of paxil much more powerful & malevolent than effexor..and i also didn't find it didnt interfere much with your mind intellectually in the way Paxil does

It's not something I had an issue with either. Now, I won't say that my emotions weren't blunted at all, but I laughed, cried, etc. the entire time I took Paxil and while going through w/d. Brain fog and cognitive issues didn't happen for me until w/d.

Same here, Laurie. Has it made me more even-keeled? At times yes, but honestly, I still have had extremely strong emotions on paxil - laughing, crying... I fell in love on paxil and experienced crazy joy over that and my wedding, have experienced horrible pain over not having babies... idk, but if this is me numb, I'm kind of scared of how my feelings will be off of it! lol

No really, I wouldn't worry too much about that....I loved my life, had a baby girl and was a sobbing joyful mess (was on 75mg for the pregnancy and delivery after the experience I had with my first child and PPD) I got angry, cried, laughed...there was nothing numb about me. My only complaint about Effexor was I kept having anxiety creep back in every so often-which led to my dose being raised many times. My huge complaint is the way it made me feel when it was truly done working (massive anxiety attacks I'd never had before even prior to meds) and of course this last year has been a real ride while gathering my marbles after coming off Effexor. Maybe Paxil blunting me is a good thing because I know I would be writing letters to everyone and feeling mad about this...but eh...I'll just keep playing Bejewelled.

Yea, there's alot to be said for numbness. Right about now I could sure use a handful.

And I'll just throw this out there....I miss, actually am grieving over my life while ON Celexa. (Today anyway) I was on it for so long, 10 yrs., I feel like I've lost a limb. I'm having to adjust to a whole new way of looking at things. And let me tell ya....it's not always that great. It sucks, actually SUCKS a lot of the time. My life hasn't been perfect the last 10 yrs. there were definite ups and downs but all n all, not so bad. Felt the whole array of emotions. Today
I'm missing the old Celexa me. It's a love/hate kinda thing. And this is a BAD day.

OOH, I love bejeweled!!!! Have you tried Chuzzle?!! LOL

I tried zoloft first and that made me like a zombie/totally numb. I took it for 2 days. And that was it. So I do understand the numbness you are talking about, and I can't imagine feeling that way for any longer than I did. But look how far you have come? I have so much confidence that you are going to BEAT THIS WITHDRAWAL and come out the other side a stronger, happier, better person. I KNOW IT

I'm sorry you are having a bad day

What you are describing is what I'm afraid of.... that is the "even keeled" bit that I feel like I got from paxil - even though I wasn't taking it for anything other than migraines, I see the difference it made in me. Kind of scary to think about it the fact it did that, but just as scary since this has been "me" for over 7 years now!

No, haven't played Chuzzle, lol. What you guys are saying scares me too. Obviously I survived more of my life without drugs than with...but I know there were times when I really loved the freedom from my GAD symptoms and could really just be in the moment, which un medicated almost never happened. And thank you for the encouraging words!

Re: Can't agree that SSRI's all cause numbness

Well you should definitely check out chuzzle! It's cute and it's fun and is sort of like bejewled.

At this point, all I know is that I hate these drugs. Because as much as it helped me with my migraines, it has caused way more problems than that, and the wd is so nasty... ugh. Hindsight is 20/20 hey? But at the time I was so desperate for some relief! Hang in there... we'll get through this!

Re: Can't agree that SSRI's all cause numbness

I guess it's different for everybody...some people are numbed out by some meds while others are activated (which means anxiety/panic/agitation/rage). Both happened to me on 4-5 different anti-depressants.

One thing is for sure: Even when the meds may help some people they do not work forever. Sooner or later the brain rebels. It can happen right away (like all the adverse reactions I had) or insidiously until people reach tolerance (poop-out). Lucky are the ones who used them for short enough periods of time that their brains don't get to that point of rebellion...

I had the angry, panic-stricken akathisia reaction on some SSRIs, and the placid Stepford zombie effect on others. It's all such a blur, all these years later, that I barely remember which was which now.

Re: Can't agree that SSRI's all cause numbness

How I got into taking antidepressants.. I was persuaded when the doc said that the antidepressants will work as some sort of a cushion for the emotional shocks that I would have to go through... indeed, being on lexapro, i was still able to feel hurt and sad, but not to the degree it would kill me (but now that i think of it, probably because i was already slowly dying inside..) The meds did act to in a way absorb the emotional,,, impact (ie abandonment) that I had to face again..(I faced abandonment from the same person twice, once while not on lexapro, the other, on it) If I hadn't been on the meds and if the abandonment happened,, I would've had another some sort of crazy episode, I guess if I were to label it, a dissociative episode, although unsure that was precisely what I had... I just know my world would've shattered, but on the meds, it made a 'crack'.. I even can remember myself thinking this at that time "Oh, if this happened to me and I wasn't on the meds... This would've killed me but, hmm, it hurts really bad, but less than it normally would have had I not been on the meds.. Am I supposed to feel relieved by this? I dunno.."

So,, yeah. I guess it does numb you to a degree, but not completely. It would be wrong to say it numbs you, but not right to say it doesn't... Maybe using the word itself could be just a bit misleading.. Everyone's perception of their feelings must be so different, and everyone must use the same word with slightly different meanings... such a vague world, describing emotions..
