tapering without liquid

I am using the Jewerlers scale to taper lexapro.
I have a question about weighing the pills.
People who use the scale with the pills, do you crush the entire pills to weigh or just shave the pills to get the desired dose weight??
Which way would be more accurate to do?
I use the finger file to shave the pills and weigh. Also I use the residue left with the shaved pills to increase the dose weigh. Am I doing it right??

I don't think there is an absolute right or wrong way to do this... as long as you get the right weight for your current dose.

I use a clean box cutter blade. I cut the pill to get it close to the dose I want, then shave small amounts off as needed to get the precise dose.

I do the same, but I make sure to save the big pieces and when there are enough I weigh them and put them into gel caps, so thers is no waste. It sounds like you're on the right track the way your doing it.

Best of luck with your taper.

Re: tapering without liquid

I crush the pill and then weight the amount with a tiny spoon on a jeweler's scale, I put the dose in a gel-cap and make up each taper a month ahead of time. I am also tapering off of Lexapro.

Re: tapering without liquid

Kay, do you think it's better to crush the pill? I have thought about this a lot because of fillers and random distribution? So far I haven't had any problems with filing down the pill, and I always file from the same place, just go deeper. One pharmacist I work with said that this would help it be more accurate. I guess it is all "guess work". I hope you are all doing great! Sorry to ramble.

Re: tapering without liquid

Sparks, I don't think it is better, I like to have my doses set for each taper ahead of time, so crushing and weighing is faster for me. I never tried the filing.

I know about the buffer weight and material which is why I believe that crusting or shaving (as long as it is not time released) is less perfect then liquid but it is the best I can do at this time so I just roll with it.

Re: tapering without liquid

That is a good idea to make so many at one time. You certainly could not do that by shaving them because of little pieces falling off. Very smart!
