Smelling things

So the last two days I keep smelling things that aren't there. Bad things, good things, unidentifiable things.

Anyone else have this during withdrawal???? LOL

Re: Smelling things

Cigarette smoke. I used to smell it when there wasn't a Marlboro within miles of me. By far the strangest of all the things I experienced during withdrawal. Like all the rest of the stuff, it went away over time.

Re: Smelling things

Yes, this is a fairly common withdrawal experience and I have no idea why it happens. My house smelled bad for no reason, so I got some air fresheners and those smelled bad too, like chemicals.

Re: Smelling things

Hand sanitizer, OMG that explains something. I've been using it at work and asking everyone doesn't it smell like skunk? No one agrees. Also I thought one of the children's hair smelled like pee and no one else could smell it. Poor little thing, I sniffed his whole body while I held him in the air- he looked so confused, lol. (I work in a daycare)

Re: Smelling things

OMG I'm so glad I am not alone! I keep getting random whiffs of some sort of sewer like smell, and then it goes away!!! Gross!!

I've told my husband our dog smells like pee (apparently she doesn't), that our shower smelled strange, that my applesauce smelled weird, and I thought something was burning in my office last week. The grossest is our shower.... but alas, everyone else says it is fine!

At least they are real smells!!! I feel like I have a schizophrenic nose right now! I understand about the shampoo for sure... I am sensitive to smells anyway and every time I get a new shampoo it smells too strong to me for about a week until I get used to it!

Re: Smelling things

i have been smelling really sweet smells - like dog poop - the past couple of weeks or so.
i wasnt sure if it due to the rainy weather and it being spring.

so you guys reckon it might be withdrawal? interesting.

Re: Smelling things

Me too! Poo and burning were my 'aromas de jour' during early WD. It passed but was a strange thing all the same. It seems quite a few folk either find regular odors too strong or smell things that just aren't there. I wonder what is going on in the brain to cause this ....

Re: Smelling things

Not even smell, I actually seemed to have this super sonic hearing too. Must go along with not being able to stand noise and music as the ears are so sensitive. Everyone would be AMAZED at how I could hear word for word what was being whispered from a so far away.... and my family were completely flabergasted at howI could hear everything on TV, even when the volume was at 1. They couldnt hear a thing....... this is dying down for me now as the tinnitus is much louder in my ears!

I second this! I considered this a kind of hallucination. I also saw shadowy things in my peripheral vision sometimes.

Re: Smelling things

It's gotta somehow be connected to hormones. I say that because I have been off Paxil for 7 years now, and a couple of weeks ago I started having the same thing happen, with the weird smells. It was exactly like what I went through in withdrawal ... everything smells bad, or like chemicals, and no air freshener or candle or potpourri makes any difference. My daughter was just here and I asked her if the apartment smelled bad and she said no, but it does to me. So weird to be reliving this seven years later.

In acute withdrawal I would often confuse shadows (especially moving ones) in my peripheral vision for bugs. Probably a perception distortion of some kind or hallucination like you say Kim. At the moment I thought I was psychotic

Re: Smelling things

My nose would also smell something burning and it seems to be so common. I thought it was just me! It's all fight-or-flight (fear-based) in withdrawal. We are wired to react to something burning or to strong yucky odors for survival!

Re: Smelling things

This is an old thread but I wanted to say that everything I smell is intense as well. I am a smoker and the smell on my fingers after smoking a cigarette is the same type of smell I get frequently. It's not the smoke as much as it is the chemical smell of the cigarette itself (i.e. same smell that I get when I sniff the cigarette pack).

This smell, and all other intense smells, have been going on for the past 8 weeks. I was on 10MG of Lexapro for 3 years, then 4 months of Lexapro at 5MG and then I've been off Lexapro for 2 1/2 months now. So the smells started about 3 weeks after I quit Lexapro.
