Urge to run away (restless legs)

Does anyone have an urge to run away? I sometimes woke up in the middle of the night and I feel an energy in my legs and they become restless and I have this strong urge to get up from bed and run away...this is very disturbing! I'm so afraid I may end up sleepwalking. I tell my husband to always watch me when I wake up just in case I do actually go out running like a looney.

I've had akathisia but this is different since it only involves my legs...

Anyone have/had this? I had it really bad for two weeks about a month ago and now it's only occasional.

Re: Urge to run away (restless legs)

what you descibe sounds like restless leg syndrome, and I get it a lot when I'm tired! I used to get it really bad when pregnant too. I have had it before meds too, but not as strong. I hate when I get it in the car or in a movie theatre! Since meds and w/d, when it hits it'smuch much stronger but I've always been able to get rid of it by going to bed and stretching out in a comfy position. It almost always happened at bedtime when I'm tired. I used to get it as a kid and tell my Mom I felt like running in the sheets, lol.

Re: Urge to run away (restless legs)

I do a series of runner stretches on the floor which seems to help clam things down enough to get back to sleep.

Re: Urge to run away (restless legs)

Thanks aberdeen and Brassmonkey for the tips about stretching. Does it happen as you're falling asleep? For me it happens only when I briefly wake up from sleeping in the middle of the night...

Did you get kind of an urge to run too???? I've never had this before withdrawal and it's a horrible feeling because many times it's accompanied by fear! It's kind of like the flight response on steroids...Ugghhh!

Re: Urge to run away (restless legs)

For me it wasn't accompanied by fear, and I knew about restless leg syndrome which is fairly common, so it never worried me. My sister gets it too. Also both of us, when we were breastfeeding our babies, got it in our arms sometimes, I thought I'd fling my baby across the room! We said it was Restless Arm Syndrome and laughed about it, and it went away eventually. But in w/d, it was far more intense, and I still get it and not at the expected time (always at night as I'm falling asleep) now I can get it anytime of the day for a bit and then it goes away again. I used to get it in college (way before my SSRI days) and I lived in a four story residence so I would go and run up and down all the flights of stairs until I was exhausted (of course I was 19 and weighed next to nothing,LOL, couldn't pull that off today). It's really annoying, sometimes I hold my leg straight out until it's so tired it's practically shaking, and that kind of helps.

Re: Urge to run away (restless legs)

AD can cause RLS due to an interaction with dopamine regulation and motor neurons.

For more info you can check the foundation.

http://www.rls.org/

They have a forum similar to this one.

Re: Urge to run away (restless legs)

You can ask you doctor to do a blood test for your iron and especially your ferritin level. If it is low, you can have RLS and my doctor/neurologist prescribed iron supplementation for 3 mo's and then retested my blood level for ferritin. My RLS and ferritin levels have improved significantly.

Of course, you need to consult with your own doctor before supplementing, even with iron, bc my regular doc told me not to take iron supplements, but the RLS got so bad I needed to do something.

Re: Urge to run away (restless legs)

I've had this too but only on occasion. Sometimes while sitting on the couch and sometimes wake up with it in the middle of the night. Its interesting how the same thing can bother one person but not another. Goes to show how we put a fear story behind certain things.
Wd would be so much easier if we could just relieve the FEAR from everything wouldn't it be??!!
