Effexor for PMS????

Wow, a friend of mine is on Effexor 75mg. She gets PMS and her Dr recommended she take 150mg for the two weeks prior to her period and then drop back down to 75mg for two weeks and the repeat the next month. She tried it and her scalp starting crawling and itching so bad and she was so dizzy (no KIDDING!!!!) so she stopped. Anyway this same friend called me this morning and said her pupils are really tiny and her brain feels like marbles and she has tracers. I said have you been messing with your dose and she said she ran out of 75's so she was splitting the 150's in half (the ones she had left from the failed PMS experiment last year). I said you must be feeling the effects from not getting the beads divided in half exactly, go buy yourself the 75's and stop splitting the 150's unless you actually count the beads. THis is my first real-life encounter besides myself who has seen first hand what Effexor can do (or any of these meds really). Scary. I can't believe the PMS idea, OMG!!!

Re: Effexor for PMS????

Prozac and Pristique (which is also Effexor) have been prescribed for PMS for years now. Don't you know? EVERYTHING can be solved by taking an AD!

Re: Effexor for PMS????

It's not so much the PMS thing itself, but the 50% dose cuts and additions every two weeks!! For Effexor no less. My own Dr gave me 5mg of Cpralex for two weeks prior to my period and then off for two weeks. I did that for about 6 months but never found it helped a lot, maybe a little bit, but then I wondered about it since it's not even a therapeutic dose and it takes more than 2 weeks for a med to have effect anyway.

That is just SICK and stupid! Take it for only 2 weeks and then cold turkey -- and do that multiple times!??!!??! WTF!? Are doctors insane?

Re: Effexor for PMS????

I know! That's doubling your dose for two weeks, then cutting it in half just when you start getting used to it...omg.

Re: Effexor for PMS????

It's actually quite common - it's called pulse dosing. Some doctors have a woman stay on it permanently at a single dose for PMS, or only take it for about 10 days during the cycle, or stay on a lower dose and pulse up for a week during menstruation.

Yeah, it is common... like I mentioned I did it with Cipralex, but only a low dose, and it was 5mg for two weeks, 0mg for two weeks, 5mg to 0mg etc. But 150mg of Effexor to 75mg is crazy, given how short the half life is for that med. Another friend was on 5mg of Cipralex consistently and it was for PMS only. She quit after awhile.

Re: Effexor for PMS????

This also has me wondering, if AD's mess up your hormones why would they be helpful for PMS? I did find relief at 187.5mg of Effexor for about two years for PMS. I had been on 150mg for ages, and had wicked PMS, we did the Cipralex thing I mentioned, with a bit of success not much, and then instead tried a dose raise to 187.5mg and dropped the Cipralex. It helped for about two years until I think I started to reach tolerance and the rest is history. Strange that it would help at all, but it did.

Pretty much highlights the fact that these docs have NO idea how these drugs work. I wonder what the stats are for woman who end up in worse shape and just stay on a standard dose?....not realizing that the drug is causing problems with withdrawal.

When I was on Lexapro, my psych doc told me to increase or decrease (can't remember which) the week before my period each month. I could never keep track of that though so I never did it.
