shampoos and conditioners

I have had really dry hair and scalp the entire time that I was on Paxil. I have been off for 6 months now and the scalp itch is driving me bonkers (well ... more bonkers). I have tried Head and Shoulders and every deep conditioner under the sun but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

Re: shampoos and conditioners

Scotia,
How are you doing? Has the last six months been better than you thought it might be? I know I keep asking you how you are doing. We were both at 10 mgs last march and so I'm keeping a watch on everyone that was about there. Casey was also there at that time, but she has needed to go back on. I know we all have our own experiences with this stuff. Just hoping all is well with you. Hope it's been a good 6 months for you.

Re: shampoos and conditioners

I have done a lot better than I thought I would. I am trying to keep a positive attitude and I think that that helps a lot. Right now it is just the itchy head and skin and the feeling like I have stepped in something wet that is bothering me.

Laurie - I tried the Scalpicin and it burns - maybe I should make myself use it and that might keep me from scratching my head because I will know that it will burn. lol

Re: shampoos and conditioners

Scotia, I would try a shampoo for dry hair, or at least a conditioner. I haven't used Head and Shoulders in years as I found it really harsh.

I have tried every line of shampoo/conditioner that I can find and my hair is still as dry as straw. It is really bizarre.

Re: shampoos and conditioners

Paul Mitchell ( I think) makes a good tea tree oil shampoo for dry scalp/dandruff/etc. My hubby and kids have used it with success. I think Burts Bees makes one too. Those may be more gentle for your itchy head. bummer! Hope it gets better soon!

Re: shampoos and conditioners

I was getting dry itchy scalp, too. Lately I've been using an anti-dandruff shampoo from eco store, it contains manuka (NZ ti tree) and sandalwood, it has worked really well.

Re: shampoos and conditioners

don't shampoo your hair every day. Condition it every day and shampoo once every 3 days. Use a 3 minute hair treatment conditioner. Then went out of the shower use a leave in conditoner. It really does work. Otherwise rubbing some baby oil into the scalp would also help

Re: shampoos and conditioners

I am going to go to the health food store and look for tea trea oil shampoo and hemp shampoo. I am also thinking about getting some almond oil and rubbing it on my scalp and leaving it on there overnight. Heck - it can't hurt.

Re: shampoos and conditioners

Scotia,
Last March my hair started to get really dry and almost wiry in some places. My scalp in those places, seemed almost wet. and in those places my heair ws thinning. Didn't know what to do, so I did nothing for a long time. In June, I started having this severe dryness around my waist, my armpits, inside my elbows, on the back of my neck. I got red and patchy and scaly and itched horribly. I tried to just deal with it topically but it only got worse.

Finally in September I went to a dermatologist and was diagnosed with dermatitis. She gave me some steroid creme, low steroid and a high one to use on the body and a steroid foam to use on my scalp. I know that those affect the choline in your body so I used the low steroid one sparingly and TONS of lotion multiple times a day. She told me to use T/Sal Therapeautic Shampoo by Neutrogena everyday. Which has helped. There were some other interesting things that I had, round patches of red that showed up on my shoulders and back. They were more noticeable just after I had showered. They would randomly come and go. whether or not I used the steroid cream on them. I don't use the steroid cream anymore. I try to keep lotion on every day in those areas. When it flairs up, I just put on lotion multiple times a day. The T/Sal shampoo keeps things under control on my scalp. I also used a few hot oil treatments, but was told to leave them on overnight, not just for a minute, because it was for scalp not just hair.

The interesting thing that I've noticed, and we've had this discussion before on here, is that the patches seem to show up about two weeks after I taper. I know, "the experts" say this is metabolized in the liver, doesn't come out through the skin....but in reality, just like everything else "They Said Wouldn't Happen" isn't accurate. We are still have withdrawal from paxil even though they said that shouldn't happen. We gain weight while on paxil, NO ONE knows why, they don't really even know if it is stored in the body in other places. They don't look for paxil residue in an autopsy, regularly I don't think. I just find it interesting that every time I taper, I can count on those patches showing up just as regularly as the other things I've come to expect.

Having said all of that, I also know I cannot blame all my ill health on paxil withdrawal. Just because we are in withdrawal does not make us immune to other health problems, .......only if that COULD be true! I just find it all fascinating to watch what happens in my body through this whole mess.

Songbird, weren't you having this same kind of stuff last spring too? It seems like the three of us have posted on all posts talking about this since then.....someone told me it sounded like the contact dermatitis they had been diagnosed with when I told about my stuff last spring.

Just interesting. Maybe when the paxil is done I'll find out if it really has anything to do with it or not. My lower back pain I seem to have in the 4th week of withdrawal is subsiding. It comes like clockwork, and I'm not even lifting anything.

Hope you get this figured out, I know how uncomfortable and itchy it is!

Re: shampoos and conditioners

I don't know about it coming out through the skin, but I believe it is probably related to the 'anti-histamine' effect Scotty said that Paxil has, which is why our allergies also flare up during w/d, also could be related to our bodies' trying to rebalance cortisol.

I hope you have some luck with the ti tree shampoo, Scotia. Sweet almond oil is wonderful stuff, I used it in my babies' baths to prevent cradle cap. Let us know how you get on.

Re: shampoos and conditioners

I've got a whole shower full of shampoos and rotate them. . .
but seriously, I find the ones from the health shops - with the fewest unpronouncable additives are the best. Wash your hair less frequently if it's dry and brittle, and a spray on after shampoo conditioner helps reduce the chance it will make your head itch. I've always had scalp allergies to shampoos, but lately during withdrawal it's gotten out of control.
What's really weird is when my head starts itching like mad after I've eaten something. . . I take a stinging nettle capsule with food sometimes to counteract this.

I am so relieved to hear this, even though it isn't good news. On day 4 after a taper my feet flair up with eczema and become unbearably itchy, whatever lotion or potion I put on them (including steroid creams and antihistamines by mouth).

It just becomes a vicious circle, but I won't give in and stop my taper. GGGGGGGGRRRRRRR - through clenched teeth because I'm in the thick of it now!
