Re: Newbies to paxil tapering, Will you please read this?

Hi all, first post so I will try and be concise.
My first taper from 40mg doing -1mg pw over 40wks
seemed okay but at the end I lasted about 3 wks before
I was back at full dodage I really was that unwell.

That was 2006.
2010 has seen me get stable now on 30mg.Done this
by the 40x30x40x30x40x30 method until I got okay
at 30mg.It was tricky but strangely not as horrendous
as I imagined.
Now I am stuck I tried the same idea to get to 20mg-
bad idea, personality altered, family noticed how bad I was.
So now I am at an impass.Awaiting a psych re-referral and
have been this way since around Sept.
What really kills me is that I always took to heart the seriousness
of taking to many benzos as they are very addictive, little realising
Seroxat/paxil was and is ruining my life.

thx for listening.......

Welcome, Aryex!

We always recommend tapering in 10% increments, every 3-6 weeks. Are you on 20 mgs now and are you taking that dose daily?

Re: Welcome, Aryex!

no I am still on 30mg and have been since late August.
Thought about trying again before seeing a shrink. I
seem to have that total 'in limbo' feeling.
I often feel this drug behaves so oddly. You hate what it does do,
are angry about what it does not and furious that when you are
off it you feel something has been removed without your permission
and you want it back.
I hope that doesnt sound whacko....thx

Re: Welcome, Aryex!

What is your goal? Are you wanting off the drug completely? What brought you to Paxil in the first place?

You can absolutely stop Paxil, but it needs to be done slowly.

Re: Welcome, Aryex!

Yes I want off it as regards depression it has gotten worse.
Originally placed on it for panic attacks and yes it does smother
my anxiety but my mood and life are so suppressed I want off it
hoping something will change.
I have been in CBT and yes it helps. Frankly I used to fear the
PDs but now the depression awaits me each morning,it is gradually
eroding me so I now know what the real enemy is.

thx

Aryex - does this mean you were alternating doses?

That causes problems for most people.

It's important to take the same dose daily until (when tapering) you're stabilized a dose and then to drop a small amount (usually 10% of most recent - not original - dose) and take that amount every day until stabilized, which usually takes about 3-6 weeks.

People often can get away with a lot (including too-large drops in dose) at higher doses, but need to be much more careful as they get lower in dose.

There's a lot of information here about how to taper slowly, but be sure to take the same dose each day (at about the same time of day) until stabilized and ready to do another drop.
