After 19 years, Paxil no longer working.

After a too fast detox, I found this site. And away we go!

So far, doing ok on approx 4 mg Paxil plus 60 of Prozac. What would life look like with neither? Is it too much to ask?

Re: After 19 years, Paxil no longer working.

welcome to the board.

paxil pooped out on me too after years of being on it.

you can get off these meds - you just have to do it slowly.

i am not sure what advice to give you as the doc has put you on prozac.

maybe it would have been better if you would have just stayed on paxil and done the 10% drops every 3-6 weeks.

i am sure other people will be able to offer advice.

best of luck x

Re: After 19 years, Paxil no longer working.

I would stay where you are on both doses for a little while and give your systems a chance to adjust before you make any more changes. I have seen so many people try the Paxil to Prozac switch with very mixed results.

This is not a quick process. Be patient with yourself.

What were you originally prescribed Paxil for? Are you doing any sort of Cognitive Behavorial Therapy to help with those issues?

Re: After 19 years, Paxil no longer working.

Thanks for the responses all. I don't feel so alone. I originally developed an incapacitating depression which led to the Paxil. It seemed like a miracle. It took me out of the black hole, but also submerged my creative, artistic, musical sense. The trade off seemed worth it.

I've done a lot of therapy since then and changed some bad habits. A series of recent deaths, 5 in 9 months now!), retirement from a toxic job, beginning menopause and going through 7 surgeries in 5 years (on the job injuries) spiraled me into a bad depression in January 2012. I couldn't seem to shake it and I went in for help. That's when the doc said lets wean you off Paxil using Prozac (longer half life in Prozac, therefore theoretically self weaning or easier weaning).

My depression lifted some with the Prozac and all seemed well until I stared experiencing withdrawal symptoms. The day I threw up in a public place before I could get to the bathroom was the last straw. I started doing my own research and found this site. Thank god.

You all know so much more than these doctors. These meds are a very dangerous game we are playing. It feels like Russian roulette.

I'm seeing someone at kaiser today for talk therapy. We'll see if that helps any.

I'm going to stay at 60 mg Prozac and 4 mg Paxil for at least two weeks to stabilize before I do anything else. It's scary. I don't know where I'm headed.

I couldn't stay on Paxil alone because I wasn't stable and was extremely depressed. The prozac seemed to break up the depression

Re: After 19 years, Paxil no longer working.

Hi Woof, welcome to pp

Some of your story sounds a bit like mine. Trust me, you CAN do this, you really can.
I think slappy's idea is a good one - your brain has had to cope with a few med changes lately - maybe give it about six weeks before you start tapering anything? That way your system can get used to the current levels before they have to deal with a (SMALL!) drop again.
I was convinced I would -never- be able to take less than 40mgs of paxil, because like you I was hit with an absolutely crippling depression last time I tried to take less than that.
Turns out the only reason that happened was because I had dropped 10-20mgs at a time at doc's recommendation, waaaay too fast. Doing it slowly, I'm now nearly at 20mgs and doing just fine.
Will be rooting for you

Re: After 19 years, Paxil no longer working.

Thanks for all your caring notes everyone. It's been nearly two weeks now that I've stayed on 60 mg Prozac and approx 4 mg Paxil. I skipped the Paxil one day to see how it would go. Got a pretty bad headache that went away the next day when I took my usual 4 mg dose of Paxil. Mood is fairly good. I'm scheduled for two different therapy groups over the next 20 weeks to help change some self talk and work on shifting my paradigms. I think both classes will be very helpful. They are through Kaiser.

Im listening more to my body and responding appropriately instead of my usual powering through the pain. It feels like I'm on the right track.

I skipped a Paxil dose a second time and the headache wasn't as bad. Since I can't cut the pills into anything smaller my thought was to stabilize on 4 mg for a couple of weeks, then alternate days with and without that dose. I'm encouraged that headache wasn't so bad, but I think I'll ask my doc for the liquid so I can taper more slowly and consistently. I'm pretty sure most of you will agree that would be smarter.

Starting to like myself occasionally now. Who would have thought!

Side effects over 19 years were loss of libido, loss of artistic and musical "insight". Nothing really major otherwise. A lot of positives happened from the drug, but I don't like that my body is addicted to it. That doesn't seem healthy.

I'm not sure what you're asking about surgery and problems. I hurt myself by breaking bones and blowing out my knees on the job. That's why I had surgeries. I don't think Paxil hurt or helped my surgery experience any.

Paxil mostly allowed me to function well enough in life over the years that I could work on changing some bad cognitive habits. I've done well, but need to do more work especially as it pertains to my parents, upbringing, and social skills.

Wow 19 years, you had a good run of it! I'm sure with the right tapering schedule you can come off just fine! Good luck!

Welcome, Woof!

I strongly urge you NOT to alternate doses. Doctors often suggest that, but it's been our experience here over many years that that just causes problems in getting off these meds. Paxil is designed to be taken daily, and the brain and nervous system becomes habituated (addicted) and expects this dose. Alternating days or doses throws the brain into chaos.

(Don't worry about your recently skipping a day a couple of times "to see what would happen" - that won't hurt you, nor will it hurt to occasionally forget to take a dose, which happens. But don't make a regular practice of skipping or alternating doses.)

(And skipping a day to see how you'll feel won't really tell you much - symptoms often don't manifest for days or weeks or longer.)

I suggest you wait more than two weeks anyway before starting to taper further, given all you've been through and especially because of the recent med changes. Get a prescription for the liquid suspension, and until you can get that, stay at your present dosages and read here about the very slow 10% tapering method.

I think you may have answered your own question lol. (In time your creative abilities should start coming back too. There are a number of threads here about how they're affected over time by these meds.)

Re: After 19 years, Paxil no longer working.

Time for a check-in. Slappy, your advice seems to be working:

"I would stay where you are on both doses for a little while and give your systems a chance to adjust before you make any more changes. I have seen so many people try the Paxil to Prozac switch with very mixed results. This is not a quick process. Be patient with yourself."

I settled in for the long haul and stopped trying to hurry the process. A couple of weeks after staying on 60 mg Prozac and at 4 mg Paxil, I dropped the Paxil to about 2.5 mg. Had a slight headache a couple days but worked through it. A few days ago I dropped again to 1.5 mg. So far, so good. My doctor wanted me to INCREASE the Prozac to 80mg since I still seemed depressed and didn't have Paxil liquid for me to use, but gave me 10mg tabs of Paxil which I'm cutting into eighths. Silly. I might have to make my own powder and measure it on a gram scale eventually. I feel like a drug dealer.

I decided to live with the depression for awhile - doing some mindfulness and meditation cognitive therapy at the same time - and not increase my dose of prozac as recommended by the Dr. I'm glad I did. I'm starting to develop some small interest in my old hobbies again and seem to be adjusting to the changes a tiny bit better. It's a slow process, but I'm beginning to see some improvement. The last thing I want to do is have to fight this hard to get off Prozac too!

Thanks for all the encouragement people. For those struggling, realize it really is a life change and will take time. Journaling here seems to help. Puts a perspective on how long the time really is. I know when I'm deep in depression, three days feels like a lifetime.

Re: After 19 years, Paxil no longer working.

Well, reading back over these posts is interesting. I remained at 1.5 mg Paxil until a couple of days ago. I didn't get around to cutting up my 10 mg pill to put in the pill box and just kind of let it go. I'll know in a couple more days if there are any physical symptoms. If so, I'll continue the reduced amount of 1.5 mg for awhile longer before tapering further.

On the other hand, life continues to throw losses at me and the grief I'm experiencing at times seems overwhelming. I tried to live with the depression/grief to give it time to work out on its own, but finally gave in and increased my Prozac dose from 60-80 mg as my doc suggested.

Therapy continues, life continues, difficulties continue. How about a little break? I grow weary.
